Stephen’s Story

The story of Stephen always encourages me and gives me hope that Christian congregations can both make wise decisions and follow through with the execution of God’s plan and His will. In a time of rapid church grow for both Gentiles & Jews (Hellenists & Hebrews in the NRSV), there were logistic issues, just like we have sometimes today.  The Gentile widows complained they were being neglected in the daily distribution of food.

So, how did the church leadership handle it? They called a business meeting, everyone invited, to work it out.  They asserted God’s word is more important work for themselves than waiting on tables. They did not say waiting on tables was without value, in fact, caring for their widows was so important they called a town hall meeting over it. And they did recommend a course of action, which did not require their further intervention. “Select from among yourselves seven men of good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this task…” As a side note, church leaders should be committed to prayer and to serving the Word.”

I often wonder exactly how the early church determined the seven men chosen to handle this task, but Stephen is described as a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit. Then, the apostles prayed over the seven and laid their hands on them, commissioning them to the work. Were there arguments or discussions? Maybe, but we know what was said “pleased the whole community.” And Stephen went on to do great wonders and signs among the people because he was full of grace and power.

Maybe prayer and the laying on of hands are still more powerful than we realize?

Grace & Peace, Charles.
