“Pulling Down Heroes”
Tomya and I were so blessed to get to go to our nation’s capital and then Boston. Having been dragged around by my mother to one historic battle site after another, I have come to actually love history. In addition, having been overseas for a few years, I really wanted to get back to our roots. The Nation’s capital really seemed to be the place to drink it in deeply.
We saw the Original Constitution … Declaration of Independence … a copy of the Magna Carta … and some of the original handwritten Amendments. We saw the flag that inspired the Star Spangled Banner. The only thing was they had the lights so low you really couldn’t see much.
In Boston we walked the “Freedom Trail”. Most stops were “free” but it sure was a long walk. We saw Bunker hill … The USS Constitution … Paul Revere’s House … the Old North Church … and even took in a Red Sox game (they claimed their pennant that night).
But looking back at all the History and taking in what the Tour Guides had to say … I was deeply saddened. You see, many TOUR GUIDES seemed to take the opposite stand of what the Old History Books had taught us. I know we can reinvent our history to make us look “good” … but who ever heard of reinventing it in order to look average or even bad? One guide went on for 20 minutes about the Poor Poor English supporters … “the Loyalists” and how the rest of the Colonists gave them such a hard time. He said this at the foot of the Paul Revere on his horse statue! Perhaps there was something more politically correct than “The British are coming … the British are coming”!
One might actually end up being embarrassed that he or she was even an American! Then, what if they started pulling down the image of Christ and Christianity?
Heroes … true heroes are few and far between. Honor those worthy of honor. Respect those who serve us. We can choose whether or not our children have much to look up to. Probably the greatest cross-cultural stand we can make today is to live honorably and respect the heroes that God puts in our lives.

PS … October 7 … 6 PM is the Annual Chamber of Commerce Dinner. The tickets are $20 and you can buy them at the door. We can have a congregational table or two if you want to go. I am honored to have the opening and closing prayers for the event this year. Let me know if you want to go.
ALSO … October 19th is Community Clean up day. We have a street near Walmart where we are going to pick up the trash. The more the merrier! What a great witness to our community!
