Another sabbath day, another test for Jesus. Many scribes and Pharisees hated Jesus because he knew their job better than they did themselves, and he acted upon his knowledge of the love of God daily. When a woman was caught red-handed, in the act of sinning, the religious leaders used the opportunity to test Jesus, rather than address the sinner or the sin. “According to the law, she should be stoned to death right here and now! What do you have to say about it, Jesus?”
Jesus accepted the challenge for what it was, also choosing not to address the sin or the sinner, but he instead addressed his accusers, “Let the one who is without sin cast the first stone.” Slowly, all the woman’s accusers left, unwilling to stand self-condemned and pretending to be free of sin. Jesus finally asked the woman, “Where are they, has no one condemned you?” She replied, “They are all gone, sir.” Jesus continued, “Neither do I condemn you, but go and sin no more.” Jesus had the right to judge her sinfulness because he was without sin. There was no doubt she was guilty, having been caught in the act. Nevertheless, Jesus chose not to condemn her, but told her to stop sinning. What an amazing act of grace and mercy Jesus afforded this woman! Jesus was the best example of a merciful neighbor.
We know we should do likewise, and yet when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?
Grace & Peace, Charles.
