While most people today would say Memorial Day is the beginning of summer, many still remember to honor our military service personnel. According to Google, it is “a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered.” Jesus respected those in military service. He was willing to heal the centurion’s servant, and he proclaimed about the centurion, “Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.”
Memorial Day is a good day for Christians to remember Jesus, murdered on the cross in his conflict with the world. The primary difference is Jesus used prayer and the Word of God as his weapons of choice. Even so, he willingly yielded his life on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. He may have lost that battle, but we know he won the war, because he lives! Just in case there were any doubt about memorials to Jesus, he already told us, “Do this in remembrance of me.”
To those who have lost friends and/or loved ones in military service, we honor your sacrifice, respect your grief, and remember the cost of our freedom, a freedom allowing us to worship our Lord and Savior openly without fear. Come share the Lord.
