“Burning down the House”
Recently, it was reported in the newspaper that a fellow was a bit freaked out about a spider and used an aerosol spray of some kind and a lighter to attack the vicious creature (please note my sympathy). It was in their laundry room and within minutes, the laundry room was engulfed and soon he was standing outside of a pond of smoldering embers … previously known as “his home”!
An isolated experience? Nope. A woman, earlier this Summer had a very similar situation. It was her laundry room and one can assume she got the evil creature as she just barely made it to safety herself … before her whole house went up in flames!
So what do we take from this? Spiders are dangerous or that some of our remedies are even more dangerous? Love bugs and a few other pesks are evidence of even “scientific” approaches to problems.
It seems that we often carry an “all or nothing” approach to our church and our activities as well. We will see a problem and then attack it with everything we’ve got. Sometimes we don’t even care what kind of fall out occurs … as long as the spider (or issue) is dead! Sometimes this takes place with problems in the church and other times it’s what people do so that they never come back to church.
Sin is a serious evil … and must be dealt with … but there is no special prize or benefit for jumping at the problem … lighting it on fire and everything around it. Instead, like the brilliant Kings of Israel, we ask for God’s guidance … Ponder over the problem and the potential remedies.
If your issue requires an immediate, un-prayed for response … you haven’t got a chance to do it right no matter how sharp you think you are. It’s like an aerosol can and a lighter. There’s no telling how much damage can be done!
What’s the chance that the fellow Who invented “church” might actually have the best ways to preserve it and yet get rid of the spiders?
