“Happy Mothers Day!”
Over the years, I have discovered this holiday brings a variety of reactions. I always thought it was a warm blessing for hard working Mothers. And as a Preacher, I would prepare a lesson to celebrate all the Mothers of the congregation.
But then one year I had a woman approach me a few weeks before Mothers day. She had tears in her eyes and begged me to reconsider having a special service for mothers. You see, she and her husband had tried and failed for many years to have a baby and could not. To them Mothers day was a sad reminder of their lot in life.
I have had others that find Mothers day to be a sad day because of a loss. The loss of their mother meant that this was a painful reminder of better times in their past. Now, having lost my own mother I can see how this could be a sad day.
All that said … sensitive to loss and disappointment I believe honoring our Mothers is still a long past due blessing we can offer each year. To the childless, often they overlook the fact that they serve as supplemental moms to many of us. To those who feel the loss … perhaps part of their healing is to recognize that they were blessed with such a wonderful mother in the first place. I know I shall shed some tears … but some of them will be for the blessing of memories that have made me one of the most blessed men on the Earth!
And I wish a Happy Mothers Day to my wife of nearly 34 years. She’s not my momma … but she is one of the best mommas I have ever known. And the proof is in the kinds of mommas her girls have become and the wives our boys have taken.
Plus … I just like the opportunity we have to bless our members. Next week we honor our graduates. We have 5 High School Graduates and one graduating with his Doctorate (Our shepherd Kevin Wharton). So make sure you are here to help us celebrate these milestones.
