Craig’s Corner “Broken chair – Broken Dreams” These past few weeks I have made at least 6 or seven trips to Houston. Under normal circumstances, I am the principle driver and my eyes are fixed on the road and the other drivers around me. Yet, with eyesight problems, Tomya has had to do almost all of the driving. I have found this new experience to be faith-building. It’s not that Tomya is a bad driver, it’s just that I haven’t had to let her drive so much. In addition, due to eye fatigue, much of my time is spent with my eyes closed. Often I find myself drifting between worlds of alert and sleep. So this past week, on two different trips to Houston, I saw what had once been a beautiful Living Room chair splintered and torn up against a concrete barrier. It’s kind of weird what can go through your mind as you’re floating between realities. But my mind drifted to the store where it had been purchased and the buyer sitting on the chair and choosing it over the other chairs. The dream of how it would look good in their bedroom, living room or office. How they had carried the chair to the truck and placed it in the back and headed home. But the chair never made it home. They may or may not have witnessed it going airborne … but the wind and the traffic claimed their chair … their dream … their investment. And it occurred to me that many of our dreams have met a similar end. A path chosen … a relationship … a career … a home … a car … and dreams have been invested. Plans made. In some cases great investment made. And because we didn’t secure it … tie it down … it was taken from us. The relationship unsecured ends in divorce. The Career unsecured results in unemployment. The home unsecured is returned to the bank. Despite the investment they left crumpled against the concrete barriers of our life’s journey. Perhaps in some way that chair is a metaphor for you and your life. There is only one tie down that holds it all together. Peter stood up to the destructive winds of the Pharisees and teachers of the Law and said in Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” So examine your life … relationships … career … education … your home … and the other things you have invested in and check to see how well they are tied down … by Jesus in your life.
