Biblical Leadership Qualifications

As we prayerfully consider additional leaders for our congregation, we must be mindful of scriptural qualifications.  There are several passages of scripture which help define desirable characteristics for local congregational leaders.

In both Timothy and Titus, Paul describes admirable qualities in local congregational leaders; characteristics like wisdom, knowledge of the scriptures, ability to teach, to preach, and to admonish when necessary, and a good measure of the holy spirit (Acts 6).  But as we delve into the qualifications, I would like to emphasize we are trying to QUALIFY individuals for leadership service, not DISQUALIFY them.  We are already painfully aware of our sinful nature and how we all fall short of the goal of a perfect life.  In a real sense, no one is qualified to lead but Christ himself, the head of the church, seated at the right hand of God until the appointed time.  If we are looking for the “perfect elder” or the “perfect deacon”, we may find ourselves with no earthly leadership at all. Having local leadership is essential to success! Paul, would not have worked so diligently to establish them in every location if it was not critically important. He even charged his proteges to finish the work of establishing local leaders, for the good of the body of Christ.

A final thought… Scripture tells us local leaders must be WILLING to serve. If you are asked about your willingness to serve, please prayerfully consider the opportunity to serve the Lord with gladness before declining because of your inability to be the perfect leader. Being named a local leader does not inhibit future learning.

Grace & Peace, Charles.
