Before someone agrees to a leadership position in an organization, they should know the expectations of upper management. While it is easy to say, “Jesus expects all church leaders to love and to feed his sheep,” it is more challenging to provide concrete definitions of Biblical church leadership, like, “An elder is expected to know his Bible, to teach classes, to pray for the congregation, and to encourage peace, love, and service among God’s children.”
As we embark upon a process of identifying additional congregational leaders, it is important to provide them with goals and expectations so they can properly evaluate and prayerfully consider serving our flock. We will explore some desirable Biblical leadership characteristics based upon the passage in Acts, Chapter 6, where the apostles set forth a process for identifying deacons to handle the day to day affairs of the early church in Jerusalem, which includes being filled with the Holy Spirit, our theme this year.
Regarding our process presented by the elders last Sunday morning, if you consider an individual worthy of a leadership position in our congregation, please go ask that individual if they would be willing to serve in a leadership capacity. If they consent, then provide their name to one of the elders by Sunday, October 27, 2019. Our current elders will then prayerfully consider each submission, likely including personal conversation with each individual, and make a determination as to their spiritual worthiness and Biblical qualification for a leadership role.
Those identified as both willing and qualified to serve will be installed during a Sunday morning service in early November.
Grace & Peace, Charles.
