Pilate completed his interrogation of Jesus with the question, “What is truth?” and I wonder whether his question used a lowercase ’t’ or a capital ‘T’. Pilate, upon hearing Jesus’ testimony, wondered, “What is Truth?” Is there an absolute truth, or does everything depend upon individual perspective?
I have heard it said, “Truth is in the eye of the beholder, (yes, I know it’s not beauty, but I have heard it said), and I have also been told, “Truth is just truth. You can’t have opinions about truth.” It is amazing to me Pilate’s judgment about truth determined the Son of Man did not deserve the death sentence, and he even declared his finding to the Jews, “I find no case against him.” But we know Pilate sacrificed his version of truth just to keep the peace. One innocent life to prevent a riot in the streets of Jerusalem was an acceptable arrangement, provided he washed his own hands of this man’s blood. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it, Add another casualty to the list, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, and include the blood of the Son of Man, Jesus.
Truth with a capital ‘T’ is getting harder and harder to discern these days. Even many “Christians” have itching ears and only want to hear self-serving, self-promoting propaganda from the pulpit. Oh, we of little faith! Are we any less stubborn and rebellious than the times of Noah, or the times of Moses, or the times of Jesus? Even Jesus, sighed wistfully, “And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
I believe in absolute Truth.
Grace & Peace, Charles.
